How to Get Life Insurance: A Practical Guide
Start with the purpose, not the product
Life insurance exists to replace your income or cover an obligation when you die. Before you look at any policy, answer one question: who would be in financial trouble without you, and for how long? A parent with young children needs coverage until the kids are independent. A homeowner may want the mortgage paid off. A business owner may need to fund a buyout. The answer sets the amount and the term.
How much coverage
A common rule of thumb is 10 to 12 times your annual income. A better approach adds up what you want covered: outstanding debts, years of income replacement, college costs, and final expenses, then subtracts savings and existing coverage. For most working families in Miami, the number lands between $500,000 and $1.5 million.
Term versus permanent
Term life covers you for a fixed period, typically 10, 20, or 30 years, and is by far the cheapest way to buy a large amount of coverage. A healthy 35 year old can often buy $500,000 of 20 year term for less than $40 a month.
Permanent policies (whole life, universal life) last your entire life and build cash value, but cost several times more for the same death benefit. They make sense for estate planning, business succession, or when you want a policy that never expires. For most people, term for the bulk of coverage is the right call, with permanent coverage added only if there is a specific reason.
The application
Expect questions about your health, medications, family history, driving record, occupation, and hobbies. Depending on the amount and carrier, you may need a paramedical exam (a nurse visits to take blood and measurements) or the carrier may use prescription and medical records instead. Answer accurately. Misstatements discovered later can void the policy when your family needs it.
Rates are locked in at your health class when the policy is issued, so applying younger and healthier saves money for the life of the policy.
What we do
As an independent agency, we quote the same coverage across multiple carriers. Each carrier rates health conditions differently, so the best price for someone with high blood pressure may come from a different company than the best price for a smoker. Call us at (305) 315 4357 or use the quote form and we will run the comparison.
